Sanctuary of Fatima

A highlight for Architecture, Engineering and Design!

The Sanctuary of Fátima, located in the heart of Portugal, has long been a place of pilgrimage and devotion for millions of visitors from all over the world. Among the sacred buildings that adorn this spiritual destination, the Basilica of the Holy Trinity stands out as a symbol of architectural excellence. In this article, we’ll explore some of its history and design, proving its importance and the praise it once received.

A Monumental Vision:

The story of the Basilica of the Holy Trinity begins with a visionary architectural competition. The Sanctuary of Fatima endeavoured to build a church capable of accommodating 9,000 seated pilgrims. An international competition was therefore organised by invitation, and the winning project, by Alexandros Tombazis, was carried out in collaboration with architect Paula Santos. The resulting structure, located in front of the historic Basilica, was a grand assembly hall that created a monumental axis in the 500×150 metre square. Its circular shape emphasised this magnificence even more.

In 2007, Nautilus S.A. was the company selected to provide comfort to more than 9,000 pilgrims with its beech-coloured solid wood chairs. These chairs have individual cushions covered in high-strength fabric on the seat and back, as well as a lower acoustic cushion. Another innovative feature of these same chairs is the automatic folding system of the genuflector, also equipped with a cushion made from integral skin polyurethane. A total of 2,500 sets of 3-, 4- and 5-seater chairs were supplied, none of which is identical to the other due to the spatial configuration and circular shape of the church. With this, the Sanctuary of Fátima accommodates an impressive 9,000 faithful in the Church of the Holy Trinity, offering not only comfort but also a unique experience of devotion.

Design Philosophy

The design of the Basilica of the Holy Trinity is based on three fundamental principles: sensitivity to the site, integration with existing religious activities and the creation of a sacred atmosphere through simple architectural means. At its core, the design revolves around two fundamental elements: a circle 125 metres in diameter and two 180-metre beams that intersect. The symmetrical circular layout was chosen for its symbolism, aesthetics and functionality, enhancing the sense of monumentality and providing a closer link between the congregation and the Presbytery.

Art and Architecture in Harmony:

The Basilica of the Holy Trinity in Fátima, Portugal, is more than just an architectural marvel; it is a testimony to the deep connection between faith, design and the human spirit. Its monumental presence, combined with its commitment to sustainable practices and the harmonious integration of art, makes it an inspiring place of pilgrimage and worship. This shrine continues to be a symbol of devotion and architectural excellence, leaving a lasting impression on all those who visit its sacred precincts.
